The National President of EMAN, Dr Emmanuel Ating, said the association was poised to analyse and proffer solutions to contemporary environmental challenges affecting the country.
Speaking with newsmen ahead of the conference, Ating said the survival of man on earth is inextricably linked to the safety of his physical environment hence the urgent need of the association to address the challenges that impeded the survival of man.
The three-day annual national conference billed for Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom capital, has the theme “Challenges of environmental management in contemporary Nigeria.”
Ating explained that the 2014 annual national conference would feature presentation of key papers on the current security challenges and environmental management in Nigeria by the Minister of Defence and Inspector-General of Police respectively.
Other presentations, according to Ating, are “Environmental management education in tertiary institutions in Nigeria” by Prof. Comfort Ekpo, the Vice Chancellor of University of Uyo; “Role of the financial sector in sustainable environmental management” by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele.”
He said that the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) would also make presentation on the environmental challenges caused by Global Satellite Mobile communication.
The president said that environmental problems plaguing human society were multi-faceted and included challenges such as flooding, gully and coastal erosion, deforestation, desertification, pollution, waste and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.
“Most of the problems mentioned above are caused by man himself and these actions destroy the environment and threaten the very existence of man,” Ating said.
He said that EMAN was the foremost professional environmental management institution in Nigeria established in 1996.
“The objectives of the association are advancement of public awareness on the importance of sustainable human development, environmental management through education, research and practice.
“It is also expected to disseminate environmental management information through conferences, workshops, symposia, meetings, exhibitions and publications,” Ating said.
He further disclosed that this year’s conference would feature induction of new members, annual general meeting (AGM) award and dinner night.
