In Nigeria, it is common to hear the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announcing collapse of the national grid which supplies power to the entire country, including the seat of power, Aso Rock.

When the national grid collapses, the entire country is thrown into darkness for as long as it will take the team of the TCN engineers to fix it.

Businesses and industries shutdown while only those with alternative sources of energy could carry out their operations within the period of the blackout following such grid collapse.

In 2024 alone, the country has recorded at least three cases of national grid collapse. This brings us to the reality of energy crisis in Nigeria.

While the energy crisis is still bad across Nigeria’s cities and urban centres, the situation is worse when it comes to rural communities of the country. Statistics showed that about 50% of Nigerian population is in the rural areas.

It is trite to say that in Nigeria, a country blessed with abundant natural resources; the energy access disparity between the urban rich and the rural poor remains a glaring issue. 

While urban centers like Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja enjoy relatively stable electricity, many rural communities languish in darkness. 

Traditional grid electricity, which is plagued by inefficiencies and corruption, has proven inadequate in bridging this energy gap.

 It is time for Nigeria to embrace off-grid energy solutions to light up its rural communities.

Off-grid energy solutions, which are primarily solar and wind, offer a beacon of hope. 

Unlike the centralised national grid system with the attendant collapse challenge, off-grid solutions can be deployed in remote areas without the need for extensive infrastructure.

This is crucial for Nigeria, where many rural areas are isolated and difficult to access.

Solar panels and small wind turbines can be installed in villages, providing a sustainable and reliable source of energy.

Solar energy, in particular, holds immense potential for Nigeria. 

This is because the country is blessed with an average of five to six hours of sunlight per day, making solar source of power a viable and abundant resource.

Solar panels can be installed on rooftops or in community spaces, generating electricity for homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Moreover, the falling cost of solar technology has made it more accessible than ever.

It is gratifying to note that the benefits of off-grid energy solutions extend beyond mere electricity provision.

 Access to reliable power can transform rural communities in profound ways. 

For instance, schools can extend study hours, healthcare facilities can preserve vaccines and operate life-saving equipment, and small businesses can thrive in rural communities.

Additionally, off-grid solutions can reduce dependence on polluting diesel generators, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

One of the most compelling success stories is the impact on education. 

In many rural areas, students struggle to study after sunset due to a lack of lighting. With solar-powered lamps and school facilities, students can study longer and perform better academically. This, not only improves individual futures, but also fosters a more educated and empowered generation capable of driving local development.

Healthcare is another critical area where off-grid solutions can make a significant impact. Rural clinics often lack reliable electricity, making it challenging to provide essential services. With solar power, clinics can maintain refrigeration for vaccines, use diagnostic equipment, and provide better care for patients. This can lead to improved health outcomes and a reduction in preventable diseases.

Furthermore, off-grid energy solutions can empower women in rural communities. In many cases, women and girls bear the brunt of energy poverty, spending hours collecting firewood or kerosene for cooking and lighting.
