The state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan last year will expire on Thursday, Senate leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, has said.

Speaking to Daily Trust in Abuja today, Senator Ndoma- Egba said although he was not too sure of the exact date but said the emergency rule will expire either Wednesday 14th (tomorrow)  or Thursday 15th May.

President Jonathan had last week during the presidential media chat hinted that he may seek further extension of the emergency rule because  “without that the security operatives in those places would be so frustrated. We would prefer to pull them out than to allow them to stay there and be frustrated.”

However, leaders from the northeast led by a former finance minister Malam Adamu Ciroma and told the President that the emergency rule should not be extended.

A similar stance is also being canvassed by governors of the three affected States including Senators and members of the House of Representatives from the State especially have expressed stiff opposition to any attempt to extend the emergency rule.

The emergency rule was first declared in May 2013 and was extended in November for another period of six months which expires on Thursday.

Sources in the National Assembly say the President may likely send in a request for further extension anytime soon.
