Justice John Afolabi Fabiyi from Kogi State will bow out of the Supreme Court (SC) of Nigeria on the 25th of November, having attained the mandatory retirement age for justices of the appellate court.
To this end, a book entitled, ‘Hon. Justice J. A. Fabiyi, Landmark Judgments: Being Selected Leading Decisions of the SC and the Court of Appeal’, will be presented to the public on Thursday 26th November at the Court of Appeal, Ceremonial Courtroom, Three Arms Zone, Abuja.
According to the publishers of the book, Prof Yemi Akinseye-George, SAN and Akinlolu T. Kehinde, SAN of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Mahmud Mohammed, will be the chairman at the occasion which will be attended by other eminent legal personalities.
The guest of honour is Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, Governor of Katsina State and former student of the retiring jurist.
Fabiyi graduated from Ahmadu Bello University in 1969, and was called to bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in 1970.
Prior to entering public service in 1975, he spent five years as a legal practitioner with Noel Gery & Co. Kano. Immediately after his stint in private practice, he joined Kwara State judiciary serving as magistrate, chief registrar, and High Court judge. He served as chairman of the election petition tribunal, Anambra State (1994 to 1998).
He was appointed as a justice of the Court of Appeal in 1998, and subsequently rose to presiding judge of the Court of Appeal in Ibadan (2006 to 2009), after which he was appointed as justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2009.
In recognition of his service to the judiciary, he was awarded Commander of Order of the Niger (CON) in 2009 and Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (OFR).
