The Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Aminu Ado Bayero was among important spectators who watched as Nigeria’s D’Tigers lost gallantly 68-77 to Cote d’Ivoire in yesterday’s final group C match at the 2021 Afrobasket in Kigali.
The Media Department of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) said other members of the royal house who were with the Emir are Bayero Isa Sanusi and Bayero Ujudud Sanusi.
The Caretaker Chairman of NBBF, Engineer Musa Kida also watched as D’Tigers struggled for a better part of the game.
Following the defeat, the Mike Brown tutored lads failed to pick an automatic FIBA Afrobasket quarter final ticket.
Despite the loss, Benjamin Emelogu led the team in scoring with 13pts, 2stls and 5 rebounds.
Uzodinma Utomi had 12pts, TK Edogi recorded 10pts while Gombe Bull’s Ibe Abuchi Agu was solid defensively, helping with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 5pts.
Nigeria will now play the third placed team in group D in their quest to secure a quarter final ticket.
Tracing the genesis of the painful loss, Coach Mike Brown said the team did not play harder and together like a team that wanted a win.
“We didn’t play hard or play together and that is a recipe for disaster against a good team. You have to give Ivory Coast credit,” he said.
