The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II has charged wealthy individuals in the society to use their wealth in sponsoring qualified youths to further their studies.

Sanusi made the callon Tuesday at the 43rd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NSHBT) held in Kano.

The emir said the call became imperative in order to encourage the younger generation especially those from poor families to achieve their educational aspirations.

“Education is the bedrock of socio-economic development and a strong catalyst for transforming a society. Our wealthy individuals should come to the rescue of the poor by supporting the education of their children,” he said.

He added that education was the only legacy parents could leave behind to their children and therefore appealed to parents and guardians to invest heavily in the education of their children.

The Emir, who commended organisers of the meeting for giving Kano the hosting right, donated N1million to the maiden edition of the association’s journal, Nigerian Haematology Journal.

Earlier, the out-going National President of the association, Professor Sulaiman Akanmu, said the society remained the major stakeholders in medical profession related to haematooncology, aneamia in particular, sickle cell aneamia.

“Other area is coagulopathy – both hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders as well as issues concerning transfusion and transplantation medicine,”he said.

He said the association would on behalf of patients continue to parley government, National health insurance scheme and the pharmaceutical companies to negotiate how to make services available and affordable to the population in need of its services.
