The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi ll has linked high rate of drugs abuse among youth in the country to improper upbringing, urging parents and guardians to pay serious attention to their responsibilities.

The Emir stated this at the inauguration of Educating Nigerian Girls in New Enterprises (ENGINE II) programme an initiative of  the UK Department for International Development through its Girls Education Challenge fund (GEC).

The programme, partnered with Mercy Corps and other stakeholders through Society for Women Development and Empowerment of Nigeria (SWODEN), is aimed at improving learning outcomes of the girl child and their economic status.

Represented by Fagacin Kano, Alhaji Abubakar Lamido, the emir said that the high rate of the youth that were into drug abuse in the country was related to improper upbringing.

“If we can trace the family background of these children that engaged themselves into criminal activities we will find out that some of their parents are not educated.

In his welcome address, the ENGINE II programme Manager in Kano, Malam Mustapha Chiroma said, “The programme has so far supported 6,571 girls comprising 3,349 school girls and 3,222 out of school girls. The beneficiaries were trained on different skills and mentored on how to start businesses on their own.

Sadiya Bello Abdullahi one of the beneficiaries of ENGINE I programme told Kano Chronicle that she was trained in beads making and that she was sponsoring her education from the little income she was getting from the business.

“I was a school dropout as my parents could not afford to pay my school fees. So, after my graduation from the ENGINE I training, I went back to school and I have now passed my O level exams and got admission into Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education,” she said.
