Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, Silas Ali Agara, has said that offering empowerment skills, tools and other items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to make them self-reliant is a new model in the right direction.

Agara stated this in Lafia, the state capital, during the distribution of empowerment items and educational materials to IDPs by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

“This is a new model in reaching out to IDPs. What we are seeing here today is not bags of rice or bags of beans but we are seeing equipment that can help our IDPs to engage in meaningful activities. This is a new model worth emulating,” he said.

He urged other agencies and philanthropists to embrace the model of empowering IDPs, adding that it will encourage many displaced persons to pick up their lives and give them something meaningful to do.

Led by its Federal Commissioner, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouk, the commission distributed 111 grinding machines, 96 sewing machines, 51 herbicides, 51 pesticides and 51 sprayers among others to the IDPs.
