Jarma is one of the traditional titles conferred on distinguished individuals in a first class emirate. 

Biography

 Alhaji Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim was born at Yakasal ‘B’ Quarters of Kano Municipal Local Government Area on the 17th September, 1969.

Like many other privileged children, he began his education at a very tender age, where he was enrolled into the Rimi City Primary School from 1977-1983. 

Upon completion of his primary school education, he then proceeded for his secondary education at the Government Secondary School, Stadium, from 1983-1986. 

Alhaji Ibrahim attended Government Technical College Bagauda from 1986-1989 and afterwards, he studied at the Kano State Polytechnic, School of Technology, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and earned a National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from 1989-1992. 

He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the American University in 2008.

Very energetic and a goal getter, Ibrahim is a focused individual who aims at success irrespective of challenges. In many instances, he has demonstrated high level of enthusiasm, pure energy and spirit of development.

 As a seasoned professional and businessman who has reached the peak of his profession and attained unrivalled positions both public and private, he is loved and celebrated by many people within and outside Kano State.

 Through thick and thin, even where things appear gloomy, he bulldozes his way by being highly optimistic and focused on the end product.

 Whatever he so wishes to achieve, he achieves, which is why it is no surprise that he has distinguished himself among his peers.  

 He was the Chairman, BBY Multi-Trade Company (Textile Materials Chairman) in 1994; Chairman, BBY Super Sacks LTD, 2011; Chairman, BBY Aluminium and Investment Company, 2011; Chairman, BBY Table Water, 2014 and Chairman, CHEE JEEH PHILIPS International Free Zone Enterprises, 2019. He is also involved in many other business and humanitarian services through which he supports the less privileged.

 He has served in many associations, including as the Chairman, Elders Forum of the most popular and largest textile market – the Kantin Kwari Market in Kano.

 The Chairman of BBY Group of companies was nominated as the receiver of the award for African Youth Assembly for Peace as ‘Peace Ambassador’.

 The title 

 Historically, the title of Jarma belongs to the first among the warlords of the Kanem Borno Empire, whose main duties include safe-guarding the territorial integrity of the kingdom and leading the territorial army at the battlefield.

Jarma is derived from the Hausa word, “Jarumta”. The word, “Jarma”,  literally means “Bravery”. Therefore, it is a traditional title given to brave persons who can fight against internal and external aggressions in the emirate.

 The year 1850 marks the advent of the traditional title of Jarma in the entire Hausa/Fulani Kingdom.

 Historians recorded that prior to this period, the title of Jarma was alien to the Hausa/Fulani emirates. The title of Jarma was said to have derived its origin from the Kanem Borno Empire, which dates as far back as the 7th century.

 According to oral narrations, the famous Jarma Mohammadu “Dan Kare Kare” was said to be of Kanuri descent. His grandparents among others rode from the Kanem Borno Empire and settled in Hadejia, while others went as far as Bauchi emirate.

When such title is attached to a person, it symbolizes courage, valor and fearlessness. 

In every society, courage can take different forms; whether demonstrated in war or peace time. This is reflected in the way and manner the title of Jarma is being conferred on individuals. 

 Prior to the 1850s, similar titles to that of Jarma, in the Fulani kingdom, include; Sarkin Dawaki, Sarkin Yaki, Madawaki, Makama and Barde. These titles are reserved for warriors.

The yardstick for the conferment of Jarma by respective Emirs is not only limited to bravery in warfare, but the recipient must have distinguished himself as a hero during war and peace time. Those rare qualities of selflessness, bravery and valor are very important.

Those who spoke to Daily Trust on the conferment extolled Alhaji Ibrahim, saying that he has earned it. They prayed Allah to give him the wisdom to carry out all duties required of him.
