It said: “Success in Nigeria is dependent on success in Kano”, but also recommends ensuring children in insecure areas of Borno get access to vaccines.
Kano is considered the only place still reporting polio cases in up to five locations as at the time of the committee’s meeting, and a historic reservoir of the virus.
“Completion of eradication will require a relentless focus on further operational quality improvements in Kano and well-planned access to children in insecure areas of Borno to ensure WPV transmission is interrupted by end 2014,” the committee recommended at its most recent meeting.
A launch of an “all-out” effort to finish wild poliovirus in Kano this year will include intense supervision, full community mobilisation and full use of available tools as a sub-national immunisation exercise between September and December this year.
ERC hopes to meet with governors of Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Sokoto, Jigawa and Zamfara in efforts to get state commitment, track the performance of council chairmen and push for full release of funding.
