Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Adeleye Oyebade, on Tuesday insisted that the sweeping #EndSARS protest has made the establishment of state and community policing inevitable.

According to them, Nigeria is ripe enough for community policing, arguing that only community and state policing can address the demands of the youths.

They spoke on Tuesday in Abeokuta, at a peace consolidation meeting with youths, leaders, members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders to address the violent protest in the state.

Abiodun noted that the #EndSARS protest has renewed the call for the reconsideration of the state police and community police apparatus.

According to him, the reform in the police must start with the establishment of the state and community police, adding that the #EndSARS protest has revealed that the current police structure is overwhelmed, hence the need for the establishment of state and community police.

On his part, the DIG said community policing would close the gap between the people and the police.
