The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has urged governments at the federal and state levels to engage the services of town planners as attempts are being made to rebuild the infrastructure and property destroyed during the #EndSARS protests across the nation.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter Chairman of NITP, Tpl. Garba Jibrin, who spoke on the theme: Rebuilding our Broken Cities: Role of Town Planning, when the institute marked this year’s World Town Planning Day in Abuja yesterday, said the role of town planning lies in the power of creativity of turning harsh conditions into a more comfortable environment for living and recreating.

“An opportunity to have recourse to town planning recently presented itself in our nation following the mass destruction of urban facilities, structures, and infrastructure that occurred as an aftermath of the #EndSARS protests. We are now faced with the damage to our urban environment and the need to rebuild our broken cities. This is an opportunity to engage town planners for the remodelling of areas where destruction has taken place and seek to regenerate them to be more functional and resilient,” he said.

He stressed that like a human life is deliberately planned, prepared and shaped for particular assignments, cities and communities can also be planned, prepared, and shaped for the livability of man and other living organisms.
