Enenche Akogwu dies in Kano attacks
Under their various professional bodies, they sent condolences to all those affected and also to family, friends and colleagues at Channels TV on the death of Mr. Enenche Akogwu, a reporter with the Channels Television. Mr. Akogwu was reportedly shot while performing his professional duties in Kano. Reporters said Akogwu’s ‘death is especially shocking as he was not one of the direct victims of the bombings but was gunned down shortly afterwards while trying to interview people at the Farm Centre area in Kano which was one of the scenes of the 20 bombs that exploded in the city that day. In a press release, the Chairman of IPI’s Nigeria National Committee, Malam Kabiru Yusuf, said ‘we are saddened by the loss of Enenche Akogwu, who was by all accounts, a courageous journalist, and for the lives of so many others lost in the attacks on Kano city last Friday. IPI condemns this unwarranted brutal killing of an innocent journalist and calls on the government ‘to make good its promise to find and bring the killers to justice. IPI urges the government, the security agencies and the media houses to take pro-active measures to protect our journalists especially in theatres of conflicts. It also urged all journalists to make their protection and safety their topmost priority while performing their duties.’
