The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has partnered with Noretek Energy to launch a 20,000 tons per annum Green Hydrogen project in a step towards a sustainable energy future. This pilot project, the first of its kind in Nigeria and West Africa to be located in Kogi State, promises to revolutionise the country’s energy landscape.

The project was unveiled at a meeting chaired by the Director-General of the Energy Commission, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, with Noretek Energy’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr Edward Traore, and Executive Director, Nuhu Ajanah, in attendance.

The meeting also featured a presentation by Project Consultant, Mr. Norbert Shialsuk, highlighting the project’s potential to transform Nigeria’s energy sector.

A statement by the Executive Director, Corporate Alliance and Marketing, Noretek Energy Limited, Nuhu Ajanah, said the Nigeria’s green hydrogen ambitions align with its broader energy transition goals, as outlined in the country’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP).

He said the plan aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, with hydrogen playing a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial and transportation sector.

“The 20,000 tons per annum Green Hydrogen project is a significant step towards realising this vision. By leveraging renewable energy sources and innovative technologies, Nigeria can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, create new economic opportunities, and contribute to a more sustainable global energy future.

“As Nigeria embarks on this ambitious project, it is clear that the country is poised to become a leader in the green hydrogen revolution. With the support of international partners, such as the German International Cooperation Society (GIZ), and the involvement of key stakeholders like FEPSAN, Nigeria’s green hydrogen future looks brighter than ever”, the statement said.

At the meeting, the consulting engineers from Germany, ILF Engineering Consultants, represented by Najid Bounader also confirmed the role of ILF in providing technical and engineering support for the successful development of the project. ILF is an experienced engineering company with a strong team of renewable energy experts to support the initiative.

The meeting ended with the presentation of a letter of support from the Energy Commission. To Noretek Energy and the set up of a joint implementation committee to see the project through.
