Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has inaugurated the Zamfara Lithium Mining and Processing Plant in Boko Village, saying the project would promote industrialisation, create jobs and support the state’s economic diversification agenda.

Speaking during the inauguration on Saturday, the governor said the facility marked a shift from the export of raw minerals to local processing and value addition.

He said the state government was committed to developing the solid minerals sector through responsible investment, job creation and sustainable mining practices.

According to him, Zamfara is richly endowed with mineral resources whose benefits can only be fully realised through local processing and industrial development.

Lawal said lithium had become a strategic mineral globally due to its importance in renewable energy, electric vehicles and modern technology, adding that Zamfara was well positioned to benefit from the growing demand.

He commended Grand Mining Company Limited, Gem Mining Limited and their partners for investing in the state and pledged continued government support through improved security, infrastructure and policies that encourage responsible mining.

The governor also urged the operators of the facility to prioritise the employment of local residents, promote skills transfer, protect the environment and implement meaningful corporate social responsibility projects in host communities.

He said the state government would ensure that communities hosting mining activities derive direct benefits from the resources in their areas.

Lawal also acknowledged the federal government’s efforts to reposition the solid minerals sector, expressing optimism that the project would attract more investment, expand the state’s industrial base and contribute to economic growth.
