Engineer arraigned for allegedly defrauding client of N4.5m

An Ogba magistrate court in Lagos yesterday arraigned a 50-year-old civil engineer, Lawrence Akandeji, for allegedly collecting N4.5 million from a client on the pretext he would renovate the latter’s residential apartment.

Akandeji was arraigned on a two-count charge of false pretence and allegedly stealing N4.5m from Mohammed Abubakar.

The prosecutor, Inspector Peter Nwagwu, said that the accused person committed the offence in July 2015 at Agege, Lagos.

Nwagwu said that the accused person fraudulently obtained the said sum under the false pretence that he would renovate the complainant’s house, “a presentation he knew to be false”, but unlawfully converted the said sum to his own personal use.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Aje-Afunwa granted the accused person N850,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum, and whose addresses and tax status must be verified.

She adjourned the case till December 20, 2018.
