The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Wednesday held a special dinner where funds were raised for completion of construction works on its National Engineering Centre (NEC) Phase II Complex, Abuja.
The Phase II Complex under construction consists of: a penthouse, secretariat offices, a 900-seat capacity auditorium and a basement  for car park.
It was not announced how much was realized that night but similar appeal launched in 2014 yielded N21 million.
Apart from the fund raising, 30 engineers including the governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi and two women engineers Dr Florence Omatule Sereki and Mrs Monsurat Oluwatoyin Agboola were made Fellows.
Fellowship is the highest honour NSE bestows on members who have contributed to practice and growth of engineering profession as well as to the development of their immediate communities and the nation in general.
NSE’s operational headquarters in Abuja called NEC is being developed in three separate project units. Phase I of the complex which is fully completed is where the National Secretariat is currently housed.
But need for additional space to accommodate the engineers makes completion of the remaining phases imperative.
Addressing guests, NSE President Ademola Isaac Olorunfemi said, “Since assuming office as president of NSE, with the support of council and executive committee, I’ve kept the passion for completing the project on the front burner.
“We may not have been able to fully accomplish that goal as we approach the twilight of my tenure as president, but I give glory to Almighty God for making it possible for us to complete work on the offices section of the building and actually inhabiting it presently.
“As it stands today, the estimated cost of completion of the project has been put at approximately N462 million.”
Present at the event were Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawal and former governors Sam Egwu and Ali Modu Sherriff.
