The Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI), an umbrella body of building and civil engineering contractors, has called for fairness in the assessment of its members’ contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure sector.

Speaking at the organisation’s 69th Annual General Meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, the President and Chairman of Governing Council, Chief Vincent Barrah, said FOCI members remain committed to delivering quality projects that meet global standards.

Barrah noted that the industry has faced challenges related to contract administration, including re-awarding of projects, contract conditions, and payment delays, which have impacted both companies and workers.

He stressed that FOCI members are reputable companies with decades of experience in road construction and infrastructure delivery.

“Our members have constructed roads that have lasted for 20, 30, even 40 years and are still in use. We want to be fairly recognised for the quality of work we deliver,” Barrah said.

On the ongoing discussion about transitioning from asphalt to concrete roads, Barrah explained that while FOCI members are ready for the innovation, a proper transition plan is needed.

“You cannot switch overnight. Concrete roads require different designs, equipment, and training. Our members are prepared, but there has to be a clear plan and enough time to adapt,” he said.

Barrah also commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under Minister Nyesom Wike for recognising the quality of projects executed by FOCI members in Abuja, noting that such acknowledgment encourages the industry.

He emphasised that whether the government adopts asphalt or concrete, FOCI members have the manpower, expertise, and equipment to deliver to the best standards, provided there is clarity and fairness in project planning and execution.
