The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) has called for greater action to address the effects of climate change on urban areas in the country.

Mr Caius Ikem, the National Chairman, NIEE made the appeal during the 2026 World Environment Day Press Conference on Friday in Abuja.

According to him, “Our aim in this year World Environment Day is to raise awareness on the challenges of climate change and to implement key initiatives to strengthen our urban areas, which is inline with our sub theme: Urbanisation and Climate Change: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future.”

“Our cities, as vital economic engines, must adapt to create sustainable and resilient urban environments that are friendly” Ikem said.
He revealed that NIEE recognises the critical need to address the associated risks posed by climate change, which includes increased flooding and threats to infrastructure and livelihoods.

The National Chairman said that as part of the activities to mark a week long 2026 World Environment Day NIEE would enhance green cover and mitigate climate effects in urban areas across the country.

“As part of the activities lined-up for this year’s celebration, NIEE would organise workshops and seminars to educate and sensitize communities about sustainable practices and resilience to climate impacts collaborating with governments to propose and implement projects that enhance urban resilience.”

He stressed the need to conducting urban resilience assessments to understand and mitigate vulnerabilities in urban areas, implement waste management programs that promote recycling and upcycling.

Ikem stated that NIEE would also encourage smart city initiatives through data analytics and public-private partnerships.

He further added that “Together, we can protect our environment while fostering economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians.

On her part, Mrs Edith Ishidi, a fellow of NIEE frowned over the way residents throw away wastes, a situation she said posed threat to lives of the people.
“We have not been fair to the environment and that has impacted negatively to human and environment, she said.”

Government cannot do it alone. NGOs cannot do it alone. The private sector cannot do it alone. It is every man’s business. So let’s leave healthy by keeping our environment clean.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Maitama Branch, Engr Itodo Tom urged citizens to collaborate with the authorities to combat the menace of flooding, that threaten the lives and properties of this nation.

The safety of our environment should be our utmost priorities, which should not be overemphasized, he said.
