Jonathan gave this charge at the opening ceremony of the 22nd Council for the Regulations of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) Engineering Assembly in Abuja.
The president said time has come for the engineering professionals in Nigeria to take their place in the comity of engineering professionals in the world as well as meet the developmental expectations of the nation.
He said government on its part will continue to give COREN necessary support to continue to effectively carry out its mandate while patronizing local engineers in the execution of government projects.
He said, “Recently, over 500 engineering graduates were employed through the Ministry of Works, and have since been trained and deployed to various offices and road projects across the country.
“Over 1,000 graduates of engineering are being interviewed for engagement in the power sector.”
In his welcome address, the president of COREN, Engineer Kashim Ali said no nation can develop by relying solely on the expertise of foreign nations, adding that Nigeria as a nation has depended on other nations for too long.
“Our indigenous capacity must be developed through practice. The time has come for Nigerian engineers to be challenged on major national projects.”
In his address, Minister of Works, Architect Mike Onolememen lamented incessant cases of building collapse and road failures which he ascribed to poor designs.
He challenged COREN to curb the incidence by identifying all those involved in building collapse incidents for punitive measures.
“Henceforth, no professional involved in such failure shall be allowed to get away with the offence.
“All relevant stakeholders should be put on notice to ensure that this renewed policy is implemented. Enough is enough!” he said.
