At least 20 teachers of English language in Kano state have been trained on modern teaching techniques by the Society for Women Development and Empowerment of Nigeria (SWODEN).

The 5-day training supported by the United States Embassy was aimed at enhancing the quality of teaching of English language in secondary schools in the state.

The benefiting teachers were selected from 14 educational zones and were expected to train other English teachers in their respective zones after the training.

The programme Manager, Hauwa Magajiya Bala decried the way English subject was being taught in secondary schools, lamenting that some teachers had developed the habit of communicating with students in vernacular during lesson hours.

“English is a core subject at all levels of learning, hence the need to improve the capacity of our teachers so that they can teach the subject properly. We want change our teaching system by incorporating students in the teaching process.

“Teaching profession has experienced dramatic change internationally, but unfortunately our teachers in Nigeria are still using the old method of teaching. We are not changing the curriculum but we are devising means of making teaching lively.”

A participant Abdul’azeez Rabi’u from Government T echnical College Bagauda said that he benefitted a lot from the training, promising to put into practice the knowledge he gained during the training.
