One of which is the polymer materials which scientists have created to achieve suitable materials that are less toxic to the environment, breathable and easy to recycle.
These polymers in their variations are used to achieve new aesthetic worth and are largely employed by modern furniture designers to not only show the unique beauty and attraction of plastic but create breathtaking, stunning and illuminating pieces fit for high end usage.
Plastics were discovered in the late 50s to early 60s and 70s as designers created variety of designs with glossy surfaces and curvy appealing shapes which were patronised for their cheapness and functionality.
Home Front checks reveal that people have begun to change their perception of plastics from cheap disposable plastic commodity to chic and desirable pieces. This no doubt prompts some furniture dealers to also include plastic furniture in their stores. However, many are still yet to actively use this type of furniture in homes, offices, preferring others made from timber, glasses, leather, and aluminium among others. Thus, most of these pieces are largely found at bars and eateries.
A dealer in all types of home and office furniture, including plastics, Chinedu Nwankwo explained that the market for the high end designs of plastic furniture is actually low because most people are yet to take full interest in them as they do to wooden furniture. “People are still reluctant to pay at least N5, 000 to purchase a piece of these modern plastic chairs here there are a variety of high end sophisticated designs but only few simple ones are imported based on the level of demand except we order them on request by our clients who operate bars and lounges,” he said.
Mrs Violet, who owns a multipurpose plastic piece in her apartment, noted that consumers who understand aesthetics don’t mind paying for it so long it is available. “If these iconic pieces are made to suit living rooms and dining rooms, why would people not go for it not minding the cost?” Particularly referring to her piece of furniture, Violet said she likes the fact that it can be used for a stool, chair or can be adjusted so that one can relax on it.
Plastic furniture gives one an advantage of durability as it is made mostly of one-piece and less joints depending on the designs. They also have long lasting colour aesthetics and much easier to clean. They take less space, making it a big plus for small apartment and less spacious area.
Although the common plastic chairs are used for indoor and outdoor parties in Nigeria, modern plastic designs can now serve numerous needs and fit anywhere. This is because they are now combined with other materials such as glass, wood, aluminium to give it the sophistication, uniqueness and elegance it needs to brighten up the space which it occupies.
A look into a beauty parlour in Aba revealed that the interior designs which the plastic chairs in the room are part of does a lot to brighten and beautify the room. “I chose these two pieces of plastic chairs in the shop because I believe they give this place a really inviting and alluring appeal,” says Regina Okafor, CEO Gina Beauty Parlour, Aba. Her choice of lemon green and orange colours of chairs complements her wall colours and the sight is indeed stunning.
It is clear that large chunk of the modern designed plastics furniture are imported and are yet to be produced by our local manufacturers which according to Nwankwo makes it more expensive. He opines that if local manufacturers can begin to tap into this area, people will come to appreciate it and use them better.
Modern plastic furniture no doubt provide unique interior design elements that make one’s apartment fabulous, thus users with exquisite taste for glamour don’t hesitate to use them creatively. When designing a home or office, it is advised to explore different materials to avoid a monotonous look. In other words, when using plastic furniture, don’t use it all the way. The idea is to have a chic piece of plastic to lounge and enhance aesthetics and create unique atmosphere in your apartment.
