The Minister for Sports Development, John Enoh alongside the governors of Katsina and Jigawa States, Dikko Radda and Umar Namadi respectively have rallied behind the proposal of making Kano Golf Club a national heritage site.

The Kano Golf Club, with its roots tracing back to 1903, witnessed pivotal moments, such as a visit from Prince Edward of England in 1927. Notably, the iron chair he once occupied at Hole No. 3 remains, now a cherished part of a Nigerian Army heritage site.

Speaking during the club Captain’s Day inaugural golf tournament closing ceremony over the weekend, Enoh said he will work with the minister of culture and entertainment to make the club a heritage center.

“The captain has talked about making this club an heritage centre and what I can commit is that I will begin work with the minister of culture and entertainment to see how we can commence work to label and define the Kano Golf club as an heritage centre.” 

Ambassador Ali Magashi passionately advocated for preserving the Kano Golf Club as a national heritage site, safeguarding it against land revocation or encroachment.

“Gaining status of a national heritage site is very important to the club and to myself because we want to do things for sustainability and not for individuals.  The best way to that is by institutionalising its existence in making it a national heritage site.” He said.

In response, the Governors of Katsina and Jigawa States pledged to engage with their counterpart in Kano to secure the future of the Kano Golf Club. They acknowledged the regional significance of the club and expressed their commitment to collaborative efforts.

Alhaji Dikko Umar Radda said:”I assure you that myself and the governor of Jigawa state will talk to our colleague in kano state and i believe he is a person that will quickly allow the golf course a breathing space.”

Meanwhile, the Captain’s inaugural golf tournament which brought together 251 golf enthusiasts from far and wide, saw Kano native Dauda Musa stealing the spotlight in the Men’s Handicap 0-9 category, securing victory with an impressive Net score of 134. Ahmadu Abdullahi, on the other hand, claimed the title for the best gross score, achieving a remarkable 144.

Tonia Rockson from Shiroro Golf Club in Niger state showed exceptional skill in the fiercely contested Ladies Handicap 26-36 category, finishing with a Net score of 121 despite playing at a handicap of 33. In the Veterans category for men, Ibrahim Sani displayed mastery, clinching the title with the best net score of 129. Sani’s precision and experience made him a formidable competitor. On the women’s side, Martina Saleh from Bauchi emerged victorious in the Veterans category.
