Data breaches and cyber threats have become increasingly prevalent, Benedict Ugwuja, Lead Consultant at CYBERGON Cybersecurity, is urging Nigerian organizations to take the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) compliance mandated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) under the leadership of Dr Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi and the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) led by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, with the seriousness it deserves.

Benedict emphasizes that compliance should not merely be a formality but a critical function integral to organizational operations. “Data protection is not just a regulatory obligation; it’s a fundamental component of organizational security and trustworthiness,” Ugwuja states. He notes that viewing data protection as a mere checkbox exercise can lead to severe consequences, including data breaches and loss of stakeholder trust.

The significance of adhering to NDPR extends beyond mere compliance. It is a strategic move that safeguards organizational integrity, builds consumer confidence, and fortifies defenses against evolving cyber threats. Ugwuja commends the Federal Government, NITDA, the Ministry of Communications, National Data Protection Commission NDPC, Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy led by Dr. Bosun Tijani for their proactive efforts in enhancing data protection frameworks. Their initiatives, policies, and enforcement actions are crucial in mitigating cyber threats and ensuring robust data security.

Ugwuj also calls upon Nigerian individuals and organizations to actively engage in the data protection process. “Everyone has a role to play in this ecosystem. From top executives to everyday employees, each individual’s participation is essential in maintaining a secure data environment,” he asserts.

He noted “At CYBERGON Cybersecurity, Our team is dedicated to practical training on data protection and compliance as required by the government that goes beyond theoretical understanding. Our exclusive programs are designed to train organizations, employees and individuals on how to effectively implement data protection measures, thus mitigating potential threats and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.”

“So embracing these practices, Nigerian organizations can transition from viewing data protection as a compliance requirement to understanding it as a vital function for operational success and security.”
