Weekend Magazine: So, what have you guys been up to?
Style Plus: We have been recording for the past four months and we have been working on some new projects, but, right now we are actually on a holiday. We have no recordings, no shows, just holiday for now.
It’s festivity period and there are shows everywhere. Are you saying that you do not have any shows to perform or that if anyone asks for your audience you’ll turn them down?
Yes, we’ll.
Really. Why did you decide on that?
We decided that we want to have something in resemblance to a normal life. Taking a holiday, when the rest of the world is also in a holiday mood.
Your last album was considered unsuccessful when compared to previous ones. What happened?
Well, the album, true to facts was actually not really successful. It was not successful because when the marketer produced the first 50,000 copies and released them into the market, they were not playing. So, he had to go back to where it was mass produced and tried to get them to give him a re-run of some copies free of charge, which at the end did not work out. Suddenly we had a problem with the marketer and everything boiled down to us being in court now.
Has this particular incidence encouraged you to spur on despite all the risks and challenges you have to encountered?
It is one of those things that happen every once in a while. For us it was just a normal occurrence, because the voice, brain and focus are still there. So, we can always go back to the drawing board and re-strategize for something better.
Tunde, how has your wife been adjusting to your social status?
She has not really had the need to adjust to anything because she knows the kind of person she was dating before she got married and I have not changed my occupation nor may status. So, basically life goes on.
Has been marriage affected you in any way?
Well, I think it has to some extent though. I am now more homely. I am always more at home if I am not working; hanging out with friends has been sort of reduced. This is not to say that I have completely ignored my responsibility to friends. I’ve not. It’s just that there is more time for family rather than hanging out with the boys or friends.
What has been the tonic that has kept you guys going togetther?
Basically, what has kept us going together is the love we all have for music. God has been keeping us; we are friends but more like brothers. Style Plus is family for us.
Have you guys ever though that you could split?
We are all human beings and it is normal to have quarrels, but we have never really had any career threatening quarrel. The truth of the whole thing is that we love the way our voices sound together.
What has been your thrill all the years you have been together?
It is the fact that people love and like us the way we are; also, the freedom to be who we want to be, being the artiste we want to be and expressing it in our own way.
Talking about freedom, are you really free as artistes?
Take it from us we are as free as birds. We enjoy what we do and we do not intend to stop in the nearest future.
How true is it that you are all going into Nollywood, especially Shifi?
We’ve never heard that rumour. (Shifi)- First of all, I do not really like music videos not to talk about full fledge acting. I do not like it because I do not have much control over the output of the video as I would love to have. You can act like your life dependeds on it and at the end of the whole day when the editing is done, what you see tarnishes your image and reputation.
What is it that you have working on at the moment?
Singles
Why singles?
The fact that we are in court we cannot produce an album now. We need a closure on the case we have in court before we can produce another album.
What stories are you telling in your singles this time around?
Well, it still revolves around love but from a different dimension. It has to do with less of begging to be loved and more of encouragement.
Recently, some artistes took part in the endorsement of the president to run for the presidential election. Don’t you think this is sort of politicizing the entertainment industry?
Well, those that did it was their choice. We did not partake in it and we’ll never be caught off guards doing such. The entertainers will rather say are using the politicians. Entertainers do not care about who wins the election they rather care about who pays.
So are you saying that even if you guys are offered contracted to endorse a politician, you would not do it?
We could have a change of heart tomorrow (laughing), but for today we are not interested in it. People must understand that we are not in the entertainment industry for the money. We sing because we love singing and we are very good at it.
What else do you guys do asides from singing?
Shifi: I do real estate and diesel
Tunde: I produce, mix and edit musical videos.
Zeal: I am into a sporting initiative but due to some circumstances I have been off for a while.
This is Christmas season, what does Christmas mean to you?
It is a time for us to be reflective on our lives. It is also a time of spreading good will and love. Christmas is a white season and a season of peace and love.
