Enugu distributes 19,700 palm seedlings to farmers

Eneh said this while flagging off the semi-wide groove rehabilitation programme of the federal government at Udi from which more than 500 farmers in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State have benefited.
The Regional Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. UcheNwafor, said semi-wide groove rehabilitation programme of the federal government in partnership with the Enugu State Government was aimed at making Nigeria to reclaim her place as the largest producer of palm oil in the world.
Under the programme, flagged off in one local government of the 24 states selected for the programme, the beneficiaries were expected to replace the old palm trees with new ones by planting them beside the old ones, while the old palm trees will be cut down after a year of planting the new ones.
Eneh said a total of 19, 700 improved palm seedlings were to be distributed to farmers free of charge, noting that the government was determined to change  agriculture  for the better.
The beneficiaries praised the scheme which, they said, would go a long way in reactivating palm plantations across the country. Daily Trust was informed that the maximum maturity duration for the palm seedlings is three years.
