Enugu State has been designated as the South-East Zonal Headquarters of the Office of the Tax Ombud, a move aimed at improving taxpayer support services and strengthening tax administration in the region.
The Tax Ombud and Chief Executive Officer of the Office, Dr John Nwabueze, disclosed this during a visit to Governor Peter Mbah at the Government House in Enugu.
Nwabueze described Enugu as a major commercial and industrial hub, noting that its growing economy and revenue base make it a strategic location for the regional office.
He said the Office of the Tax Ombud was established to provide a transparent, impartial and efficient platform for resolving disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities.
He said effective dispute resolution would encourage voluntary tax compliance, reduce friction between taxpayers and tax authorities, and boost public confidence in the tax system.
He called for closer collaboration with the Enugu State Government to promote taxpayer protection and strengthen confidence in tax administration.
The Tax Ombud explained that the office, established under the Joint Tax Board (Establishment) Act, 2025, is mandated to receive and resolve complaints relating to taxes, levies, regulatory fees, customs duties and excise matters.
Responding, Governor Mbah welcomed the development and pledged the state’s support, including the provision of necessary facilities.
He said Enugu was well-positioned to host the regional headquarters, citing the administration’s drive to expand the state’s economy through private sector-led investments.
