The Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Morteza Rahimi Zarchi, has called for the involvement of more women in leadership positions saying Islam recognizes the role of great and outstanding women in the Quran.
Mr Zarchi stated this at the annual seminar on Hazrat Fatima Az-Zahra (RA) organized by the Cultural section of the embassy in Abuja.
According to him, great women like Fatima (daughter of Prophet Muhammad), Aisha (his wife), Maryam (mother of Jesus) and Jochebed (mother of Moses) were mentioned in the Quran for their contributions to Islam and the society at large.
Zarchi said Iran places a high premium on women and thus they are saddled with leadership and important positions like the vice presidents, ministers and others.
He stated Iranian women are remarkably higher than men in science, social science and arts where they have been outstanding.
The guest lecturer, Professor Muhammad Mahmood, said Islam promotes equity and that the rights of men and women are clearly spelt out.
He stated that Islam regards men and women as being of the same essence created from a single soul.
He added that a woman has a complete independence in Islam but needed to be guided properly by men around her.
