Nigeria’s long jump star, Ese Brume, has dismissed reports that she received $30,000 from the National Sports Commission (NSC) following her near-fatal car accident in the United States last year.

The false claim, which spread widely on social media, was amplified by TeamNigeriaUK3, a popular Instagram page that tracks Nigerian athletes abroad. Citing sports analyst Tope Ashaolu, the page alleged that the NSC had stepped in with financial assistance after Brume’s crash.

Brume, however, wasted no time correcting the narrative. In an Instagram story, the 29-year-old Olympian tagged the account directly, describing the post as misleading.

“Just to be clear, NSC did not give me any $30,000. Please get your facts straight. Thanks,” she wrote.

The decorated athlete, one of Nigeria’s most consistent medallists over the past decade, was involved in a serious accident in 2024 when her car nearly plunged off a U.S. bridge. The crash left her injured and emotionally shaken, forcing her to cut short her season.

The timing was particularly cruel, coming just months before the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Though she battled to return to competition, Brume finished 10th in her qualifying group and 19th overall, far below her usual medal-winning form.

Her denial comes as she works her way back to full fitness, with eyes set on reclaiming her place among the world’s elite in the coming athletics season.

Brume started representing Nigeria at the junior level and won about 20 medals at major competitions between 2015 and 2025.
