The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), in collaboration with the European Union (EU), will today, July 25, hold a one-day training for editors in Lagos to tackle the growing threat of fake news, disinformation, and misinformation in Nigeria’s media landscape.

In a joint statement signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild said the training, supported by the EU, aims to equip editors and media executives across platforms with the skills to identify, verify, and counter misinformation, while promoting accurate and trustworthy journalism.

The NGE said the unchecked spread of fake news poses a serious threat to the credibility of the media and the stability of the country. 

It said editors play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability of published information, but recent trends show they require more technical skills and training to combat false narratives effectively.

The Guild highlighted the role of social media in accelerating the spread of disinformation and stressed the need for rigorous verification in reporting. 

It said the training is expected to enhance fact-checking capabilities, improve reporting accuracy, and strengthen the media’s role in promoting accountability and informed decision-making across Nigeria.
