This was disclosed by the Cross River state Chapter Secretary of All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, Pastor Koton-Mboba Obeten, in an interview with Daily Trust recently in Abuja.
Pastor Obeten who said many products and by-products are derived from the oil palm, stressed that all the derivatives are very useful and important for human and industrial purposes.
“From the roots to the stem, palm fronds, fruits, nuts, shells, chaff and every other thing, it’s very useful, nothing is thrown away,” he told our reporter.
Pastor Obeten who maintained that Cross River state is the largest producer of oil palm and its derivatives, said that value addition in order to get their products to export standard is now their main target.
He stated that their major challenge is market for the oil palm products. “We want to open up more market outlets involving international marketing companies,” Obeten added.
He urged the government and other stakeholders to make modern processing equipment available at affordable prices to the small scale farmers so as to shore up their output and income.
