A former staffer of a first generation bank, Dominion Abraham, and three others have been arrested for allegedly masterminding the robbery attack on some supermarkets in Lagos.
The 36-old-old former banker was arrested on Friday by detectives attached to the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Lagos State police command.
A police source told our correspondent that Abraham belonged to a four-man armed robbery gang that specialised in burgling residential houses, stores, shops and warehouses in Lagos and other states in Nigeria.
Those arrested along with Abraham are Yusuf Badmus, Chime Njenobi 26 and Abimbola Austin 30.
Abraham, giving the reason why he went into crime, said, “I was retrenched in 2013. At the bank, I was paid N80,000 as my monthly salary. But after my sack, that income stopped and I became idle for many months.”
The suspect said that though he went searching for another job, he could not secure any and that at a time, he started driving an employer’s taxi.
He added he met members of the armed robbery gang at Ikeja under-bridge while operating as a cab driver.
Abraham confessed, “Unfortunately, the friends I made during this critical period were bad friends who kept telling me I can end my suffering by joining their armed robbery gang. They were heavy smokers and alcoholics. But because of hunger and other personal pressing problems, I could not leave them. That is why I got into this mess.
“I met one man called Idache. We are both from Benue State. Idache promised to introduce me to a group that would pay me a better salary. I was happy. But the first outing with the group made me know they were robbers. My role in the gang was to drive them to anywhere they wanted to operate.”
Another member of the gang, Badmus, said that he joined the gang last year and his first operation with the gang was in Gowon estate, Lagos.
“We burgled a container in 2017. We were arrested and charged to court. We were later remanded in Kirikiri prison for four months but later granted bail. This one for which I was arrested again was the fifth one.
“It was Dominion (Abraham) who brought the job for which he was arrested. We burgled a container shop at Gowon estate. We broke the safe and collected two phones, two laptops and the small cash in the safe. It was the phones we sold to a trader at Computer Village, Ikeja, that the police used to track us down. I went to the Computer Village and the police saw me and arrested me,” he said.
