A 32-year-old ex-convict, Ifeanyi Okeke, has been arrested while robbing motorists in traffic with a toy gun.

Okeke, who the police disclosed had once served five years in prison in Ghana, was arrested in the Alapere/Ketu area of the Lagos metropolis.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who confirmed the incident, said a good Nigerian drew the attention of the police to the activity of the suspect.

Edgal said that the complainant had observed the suspect drawing the toy Beretta pistol on occupants of a vehicle and demanding they hand over their valuables to him.

The police boss said that based on the strength of the report, a team of policemen from the command was deployed to the area. 

“The undercover detectives, after monitoring the suspects from a safe distance, discovered that he would pull out the gun from under his cloth, show it to occupants of a car, and in shock they would hand over phones, cash and other valuables to him.

“After collecting the valuables, the suspect would move to another vehicle and repeat the same action. He was arrested and when he was searched, he was found to be in possession of a toy gun with the semblance of a Beretta pistol.

“During interrogation, he confessed to being an ex-convict in a Ghanaian prison. He said he was using the toy gun to intimidate and rob passers-by of their valuables. He made mention of other gang members still at large,” Edgal said.

In his confessional statement, the suspect said that since he came back to Nigeria from Ghana, he could not find his feet. “I tried as much as possible to look for a job but couldn’t. I found the toy gun in a refuse dump at Ojota. I took it and started using it to harass people and collecting whatever they have,” he said.
