A former Flying Eagles star, Abubakar Lawal, who plays for Vipers FC of Uganda, died yesterday morning in Kampala at the age of 29.
Confirming the unfortunate incident, Vipers FC in a terse message on X formerly called Twitter wrote: “He came, He saw, He conquered. RIP Abubakar Lawal.”
The club didn’t reveal the cause of the death of their influential player.
However, AFP quoted Ugandan police as saying they were investigating the death of the player who fell from a shopping mall balcony in Kampala.
He fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade early on Monday, police said in a statement.
“Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” police said.
Lawal, a dynamic and skillful attacker had been a key part of the Vipers SC squad since joining from AS Kigali in 2022, cementing his status as one of the best strikers of his generation.
It will be recalled that the Sokoto State born player scored memorable goals for Vipers including his club’s first-ever goal in the group stage of CAF Champions League.
Abu, as he was popularly called scored in Vipers’ 1-1 draw with highly rated Raja Casablanca of Morocco in the 2022 edition of the elite competition.
Known for his pace, technical ability, and goal-scoring instinct, Abubakar played for a number of Nigerian clubs like Kano Pillars, Wikki Tourists and Nasarawa United before he moved abroad to join AS Kigali of Rwanda.
