Ex-hospital intern in court over extortion

A former intern with the Laboratory Department of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Oshiemoh Adeiza Leo, has been arraigned before a Grade 1 Area Court sitting in the area for alleged extortion.

The prosecutor, Barrister AA Tanko, said the defendant committed offences of criminal trespass, impersonation and extortion, contrary to section 348, 179 and 292 of the penal code law.

He told the court that the defendant trespassed into the hospital’s laboratory to render illegal service, for which he allegedly collected N8,000 from one Anslem Ihemebiri, of Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

He said the defendant promised to buy and screen blood for the complainant despite the fact that the hospital does not buy or sell blood. The defendant, who was in court denied the allegations.

The prosecutor urged the court to fix another date for hearing of the matter since the defendant denied the allegations.

Counsel to the defendant, Barrister Lucky Ogbeayo, sought the bail for the defendant, which he brought under section 162, 158, 163 and 165 of AJA and section 36 sub section 5 of the 1999 constitution.

The judge, Adamu Isah, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with a surety who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and must present his or her voters card.

He then adjourned the matter till January, 14, 2020 for further hearing.
