Ex-Lagos councilor arrested over illicit drugs

A former two-term councilor at Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council of Lagos State, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following credible intelligence linking him to illicit drug sales and trafficking.
A statement by Femi Babafemi, the Agency’s spokesperson, noted that the 45-year-old former local council chief, who currently serves as a legislative aide, was arrested on Monday, March 2, at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki.
‘’A search of his home led to the recovery of 40 kilograms of “skunk” (a strain of cannabis) from one of his rooms. In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of the drugs and the property, noting that he had previously served two terms representing the Orimedu community,’’ the statement.
In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), NDLEA officers on Tuesday, March 3, intercepted a 32-year-old businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, in a vehicle traveling from Obollo-Afor, Enugu State, to Zuba. A search of his luggage revealed 1,000 pills of Tapentadol (250mg) concealed inside baby diapers. The suspect admitted ownership and stated he was transporting the consignment to Guduwa village in Gurara LGA, Niger State, where he operates a provision store.
On the same day, NDLEA operatives on patrol along the Kabba-Obajana highway in Kogi State intercepted 1.550kg of “Colorado” (a synthetic strain of cannabis) concealed inside a standing fan carton. The package belonged to a 36-year-old Cameroonian, Mey Ali Muhamat, from Maroua, Republic of Cameroon. According to Babafemi, the suspect was traveling in a commercial bus from Lagos toward Cameroon via Lokoja, Kano, and Maiduguri.
In Niger State, operatives on patrol along the Mokwa-Jebba road on Wednesday, March 4, intercepted a commercial bus from Ibadan, Oyo State, carrying 500 components for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed in a white sack. NDLEA said the items were destined for a recipient in Pelegi.
A swift follow-up operation led to the arrest of the intended recipient, 21-year-old Osama Abdullahi, in Pelegi, Mashegu LGA.
