A former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has urged Muslims and public office holders across the country to prioritise good governance and ensure that Nigerians benefit from the dividends of democracy.

Ikuforiji made the call during the fourth edition of Ramadan Iftar (breaking of fast) organised for media practitioners.

He stressed that regular evaluation of government performance by citizens would help strengthen accountability and encourage leaders to deliver more effective governance.

The former Speaker also called on Nigerians to reduce dependence on imported food and channel more investments into agriculture, which he described as critical to national economic stability.

Delivering a lecture titled “Islam and the Challenges of Good Governance,” Muslim scholar Abdul-Hakeem Olapade emphasised that transparency, accountability and adherence to the rule of law are essential pillars of responsible leadership.

Olapade explained that Islamic teachings strongly emphasise justice and fairness in public administration, urging leaders to manage public resources with integrity and equity.

According to him, governance that is anchored on justice and fairness would help foster peace, stability and sustainable development across the country.

Another lecturer at the event, the Chief Imam of the Crestland Estate Muslim Community, Mutiu Orolu, encouraged Muslims to participate actively in civic duties and contribute meaningfully to the country’s social and economic development.

“Love for one’s nation is not a sin. As Muslims, we have a duty to contribute positively to nation building,” he said.
