Ex-NSCDC officer arrested over theft of 17 rams

A former officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kebbi State has been arrested for allegedly stealing 17 rams.

It was gathered that the suspect, Girchi Danladi, went to the mammy market located within the army barracks in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday ostensibly to relax but instead stole 17 of the animals which he moved to Kalgo town, a 30 minutes’ drive from the barracks.

A witness who spoke to our reporter said “The man is popularly known at the market as a drunk.

“On Sunday he came to the mammy on the pretext of patronizing a beer spot but entered the garden where the Seriki of the mammy market kept his rams and stole 17 out of them.

“We suspected that he used some trick to herd the rams from the barracks to Kalgo where he took them for sale,” the witness said.

He added that soldiers from the barracks were drafted to trace him to Kalgo where he was caught negotiating with a buyer and was arrested and handed over to the police in the area.

When contacted, the spokesman of Kebbi State Police Command, DSP Suleiman Mustapha, told our correspondent that he was out of the state and could not immediately confirm the incident.

However, the spokesman of the NSCDC, Kebbi State Command, Mr. Amana Bamaiyi, said the suspect had since been dismissed from the NSCDC and even charged to court for his nefarious activities some years back.

“He has been going about parading himself before the villagers as a corp of the civil defence in  Kebbi State,” he added.
