Dumebi Ifeanyi, Chairmanship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last Local Government election in Imo State, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ifeanyi, a long-standing party strategist, announced his decision after what he described as “careful reflection and wide consultations” with political associates, community leaders, and youth stakeholders across Aboh Mbaise and Ngor Okpala, his constituency.

Speaking shortly after confirming his defection, Ifeanyi praised the leadership of Hope Uzodimma, saying the governor’s development drive and political stability agenda influenced his decision to align with the ruling party.

“Imo State is at a critical juncture. We must move beyond divisions and work with a leadership that is focused on consolidation and sustainable development. Governor Uzodimma has shown commitment to repositioning the state, and I am ready to contribute my quota within the APC,” Ifeanyi said.

Widely regarded as a skilled communications expert and grassroots mobilizer, Ifeanyi built much of his political structure through youth engagement and media-driven advocacy.

His influence in Aboh Mbaise and Ngor Okpala has been particularly pronounced among younger voters and politically active community groups.

Within PDP ranks, he had been seen as a key mobilizing force, especially during periods of internal realignment and factional disputes at the national level. Political observers note that his exit represents not just a personal shift, but a strategic recalibration that could have ripple effects within the opposition in Imo State.

A senior APC chieftain in Owerri, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:

“Dumebi Ifeanyi brings structure, media sophistication, and youth energy. His presence strengthens our outreach and deepens our grassroots penetration in Aboh Mbaise and Ngor Okpala.”

Meanwhile, PDP stakeholders in the constituency are said to be holding consultations to contain potential fallout, amid fears that Ifeanyi’s move could encourage further defections among loyalists and youth groups aligned with him.

Political analysts suggest that the development may significantly alter the balance of power in the federal constituency, particularly as preparations quietly gather momentum ahead of the next electoral cycle.
