A former member of the House of Representatives from Gombe State, Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki, has declared his intention to contest for the governorship seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mailantarki, who was the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 gubernatorial election, submitted his letter of intent at the PDP state secretariat in Gombe, on Monday.

The director-general of his campaign, Malam Adamu Bappah ,described Mailantarki as a leader that is highly connected with the grassroots and always willing to work for the people and the collective good of Gombe State.

According to him, Mailantarki’s governorship ambition has inspired several legislative hopefuls, as he arrived with about 20 House of Assembly aspirants and supporters seeking various elective positions under the PDP.

He said Mailantarki had proven to be a good leader having offered good representation to his constituents as a member of the House of Representatives representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye constituencies of Gombe State between 2011 and 2015.

In the letter submitted to the party executives, Mailantarki said his aspiration was borne out of a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to public service.

“I am confident that with the collective support of our party leadership and stakeholders, we can further strengthen democratic governance and advance the socio-economic development of Gombe state for the benefit of all.

“I respectfully seek the support, guidance and cooperation of the party leadership at all levels, as I present myself for this important responsibility,” part of the letter read.

Receiving the form on behalf of the party, the Deputy State Chairman, Adamu Dan’Azumi, described Mailantarki’s declaration as evidence of growing confidence in the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said the influx of aspirants into the party showed that the opposition was regaining momentum in the state.

He commended Mailantarki for submitting his letter early and assured all aspirants of fairness and transparency in the party’s nomination process.

Dan’Azumi also announced that the PDP has extended the deadline for submission of expressions of interest from May 3 to May 9, urging all interested aspirants to take advantage of the extension.

Earlier, the State Secretary, Adamu Haruna Abubakar, called on stakeholders across the local governments to mobilise more aspirants to obtain and submit their forms.

“The PDP will field a candidate. We should not lose hope. Everyone should come out, stand firm, mobilise, and contest this election seriously,” he said.
