The increase in cases of examination malpractice in schools has lowered the integrity of education authorities and the trustworthiness of schools’ certificates, the Zonal Coordinator, West African Examination Council (WAEC), Abuja, Mr. Yusufu D. Ari, has said.
Mr. Ari, who was speaking at the 2016 national stakeholders’ dialogue on examination malpractice yesterday in Abuja, said cheating among students during examinations was so rampant that it was “threatening to overwhelm and destroy the education sector in Nigeria.”
He said poor value system, high level of moral decadence in the society, undue parental pressure and societal expectations, poor study habits, psychological distress and fear of failure were some of the causes of exams cheating in the country which authorities must address.
He said examination malpractice “leads to loss of trust and confidence in the education system, discredits examination boards and erodes confidence in certificates.”
Chairman of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Abuja chapter, Mohammed Sani, said exam cheating was discussed during the recent national congress meeting of the union and members will work with WAEC in addressing it.
