Yahaya stated this while speaking on the theme: “Examination Malpractice: A Thorn in Education Flesh” at the ‘Speech and Prize-Giving Day’ of Junior Secondary School, Area 11, Garki, Abuja.
He said: “People assume that it is only in schools that exam malpractice occurs, but it happens everywhere. Even in the civil service, ministries, medical schools, people perpetrate exam malpractice.”
He, however, condemned parents’ involvement in exam malpractice, which he described as ‘double-promoting’ the child to higher classes, saying “a child will be in primary four and the parents want him/her to write common entrance exams. He added that there were proven cases where parents pay people to write exams for their children. That’s one of the many ways parents encourage exam malpractice.
While urging parents to allow the education authorities to run the system the way it should be, he noted that the educational system is structured in such a way that within a space of time, and given the right kind of training, a child would definitely attain his optimum talents.
Earlier in her speech, the principal of the school, Mrs. Jimoh Iyabo, called on parents not to leave the work of child upbringing to the teachers alone, noting that some parents just dump their children in the school without monitoring their performance.
