There was excitement among residents of Hayin Malam Bello new extension in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State as the only Public Primary School in the community got 12 additional classrooms to accommodate the  teeming population of children. 

The school, with a population of 1,150 pupils, had been in bad shape until a recent state government’s intervention through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). A publication by Daily Trust on January 22, 2020 had painted the poor state of the school with community members appealing to the state government to construct additional classrooms. 

However, Chairman of the Education Committee of Hayin Malam Bello LEA Primary School, Malam Adamu Sulaiman, said the 12 classrooms have reached 75 per cent completion and when completed, will accommodate up to 2,000 pupils from the community and environs. 

Sulaiman explained that apart from the classrooms, a vocational skill acquisition centre, which comprises a computer room, science laboratory, electrical maintenance workshop, welding fabrication workshop and phone repairs workshop, has been constructed within the school premises courtesy of the current Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. 

He said the vocational centre has been handed over to the education committee by SUBEB but the welding workshop is yet to be fixed. He appealed to the authorities to help install solar power as well as provide the centre with a generator to make it functional. 

Another resident of the area, Malam Tukur Danja, described the construction of the classrooms and the vocational centre as a welcome development. He prayed for more of such developmental strides in the community due to its large population.
