Mailadi observed that refuse heaps generated in homes, markets, shopping areas and other public places are supposed to be collected by the appropriate government agencies.
Engineer Mailadi lamented that heaps of uncollected refuse dotted major streets of Bauchi like Ran Road, Emir’s Drive, Wunti Street, Bakin Kura, Railway Road, Federal Low Cost Housing Estate, Wuntin Dada, Yakubun Bauchi Road and many others.
He pointed out that even when the refuse is collected in the available dilapidated trucks, it usually ends up being littered on the streets to the discomfort of other road users.
Engineer Mailadi said it was in view of the environmental hazards that the state government and its agencies are called upon to squarely address the deteriorating conditions of waste management, not only in Bauchi metropolis, but in all the urban towns and centers in the state.
The environmental expert further maintained that the state government should empower the State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) and the local governmental councils to deliver on their mandates of appropriately managing waste for the benefit of both the health of the citizens and the environment.
Other proactive measures to tackle waste management advocated by the expert includes repair of all waste collection vehicles, provision of additional refuse bins to minimize indiscriminate dumping of refuse, engaging civil society groups to conduct sensitization and awareness in order to mobilize the citizens to lend a helping hand in waste management, repair all and construct additional drainages in all urban towns of the state and the provision of convenient land fill sites for refuse disposal.
He also suggested the strengthening the capacities of local governments through adequate and continuous release of funds for activities in waste management within the local governments and engagement of the private sector to participate in the venture of waste management as well as supporting development agencies working in the sector to help develop policies on environmental and waste management in the state among others.
Engineer Mailadi was optimistic that if the enumerated suggestions are implemented by the government, the state would be transformed from its present gloomy and hopeless look to a vibrant and investor-attractive one.
