The Director General, National Productivity Centre, Alhaji Kassim Akoh, has charged employers of labour to develop and embrace policies and procedures that attract, motivate and retain their employees.
Akoh was speaking at a public human resource forum organized by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) in Abuja, themed, ‘Motivation and Productivity: Gaining the Edge.’
He said when organizations have to strive to survive, they must improve on their performance. This, he said, was only possible if the workers, as the driving force, were motivated.
Akoh, who was represented by the centre’s HR director, Malam Hassan Abdullahi, argued that workers with required attributes could perform poorly if not motivated to put in their time and effort in assigned tasks.
“In an ever increasing competitive world, the satisfaction of workers’ needs in order to retain them for the achievement of corporate goal has been acknowledged as very necessary for the survival of organizations,” he said.
Incentive, he added, energised the creative talent of people which in turn could be channeled towards the performance of a given task. Akoh, therefore, listed payment of adequate salaries, training funds, improved supervision, job security among others as measures to improve workers’ performance.
The Deputy Director, Human Resource, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) Dr. Azubike Okoro urged employers to avail their workers opportunities to participate in goal-setting activities.
