A prominent stakeholder in Nigerian agribusiness and Executive Director, Admiral Environmental Care Limited, Mr. Shedrack Madlion, has created an e-commerce platform known as ‘Farm to Table’ to link Nigerian farmers to local and international markets.
Disclosing this recently in an interview at the 1st Daily Trust Agric Conference and Exhibition in Abuja, Mr. Madlion, said the initiative came on the heels of losses suffered by farmers across the country over the years due to market challenge.
“I have created an e-commerce platform for food marketing to assist farmers. I have also created an initiative to mop up foods from all nooks and crannies of the country and deliver them to the tables of Nigerians and beyond. This is my little contribution to tackle the market challenge faced by our farmers. It will enable the farmers to continue to produce. I call it ‘farm to table,” he told our reporter.
The executive director lamented that for the past 51 years, agriculture has been kept in the background in Nigeria, saying “we only depend on the rainy season which cannot give us enough. But as long as you live, you must have business to do with agriculture.”
He maintained also that while silos across the country are empty, the agric bank gives money to commercial banks to get interest instead of giving loans to farmers to produce food. “They don’t even believe in productivity of farmers,” he added.
Mr. Madlion decried the ban placed by the EU on some foods, while asking: “If the foods you are producing are not exportable, then what are you doing?”
He therefore called on government to come up with a programme designed to replace our ageing farmers with the young ones to ensure vibrancy in the sector.
He described the Daily Trust conference as an advice and a wake- up call on Nigeria and all stakeholders in the agricultural sector of the economy.
