Not only smoking a cigarette after a meal is bad for your health, said Alege, internal auditor for Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria in a lecture during the monthly keep fit exercise for members of staff of the medical institution.
He identified seven dangerous acts after meals: eating fruits immediately after meal, drinking much tea, bathing after meal, loosening the belt after meal, walking about and sleeping immediately after meals.
“When you eat your fruits with meal, the food stuck in the stomach along with the content of the meal and cannot reach the intestine in time. Lying there can spoil the remaining food in the stomach too. Fruits should be eaten at least one hour after meal or before a meal and preferably in an empty stomach,” he explained.
He further said, it is in the morning that the body can best use the nutrients in the fruits and get enough to start the day, adding that, tea leaves contain a high content of acid and the substance can cause the protein content in the food to be hardened, thus difficult to digest.
Bathing after meal, according to him, is not good because it increases blood flow to the hands, legs and body. Also it makes the amount of blood around the stomach to decrease.
“Loosening the belt after meal is bad not because it causes the intestine to twist or block but because it means you have over eaten to a level that you are uncontrollable and walking directly after meal is not good for our health because it can result into acid influx and indigestion,” he added.
Alege then cautioned people not to sleep immediately after meal because the food “we take will not be able to digest and that can lead to gastric infection in our intestines.”
