The Chairman, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), Town Planner Banabas Atiyaye, has called for the establishment of training institute for artisans in the country.
Atiyeye, who stated this in an interview with our reporter, said the establishment of the training institute became necessary in order to improve the knowledge of artisans to compete with their foreign counterparts coming into the country.
He said: “We have discovered that our artisans have the basic knowledge of construction work through experience or interaction but lack formal training on it. We want the government to establish a training institute for artisans to be able to compete with artisans with foreign artisans. For instance, the Togolese artisans do it better that ours, not  because of any other thing but because they have gone through formal training in those area.”
Atiyeye  urged the government to formalise the operation of  artisans,  saying that they could help the government in reducing the rate of building collapse in the country. According to him,  if artisans were given formal training, they would be able to detect sharp practices by engineers which could lead to building collapse.
He appealed to government to promulgate a law making it compulsory for any person or engineers who engaged the services of artisans to be responsible for the hazard allowance of those working on site for the period that the construction work would last, saying that the meagre money given them would not be enough to help them in advent  of any injuries.
