Experts have called on government at both federal and subnational levels to explore comprehensive approach in tackling corruption which they say has stalled Nigeria’s economic prosperity.

They made the call in Abuja at the MacArthur Criminal Justice Cohort Post-International Anti-Corruption Conference engagement, organized by the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity

The Executive Director of the Center, Dr Umar Yakubu, highlighted noted that there is a need for a comprehensive approach to addressing corruption. as “Corruption goes beyond bribery and procurement; it includes other aspects such as conflict of interest,” .

He emphasised the importance of understanding the different aspects of corruption and taking recommended steps to address them not only at the federal but states and local governments

Also speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Prof Mohammed Ladan, emphasised the need for strengthening cross-sectoral capacity to fight corruption in Nigeria.

He further warned that the new fiscal autonomy of local governments could lead to problems if their capacity is not enhanced to implement measures for fiscal transparency

Also speaking at the event, the Programme Officer of the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, Nkemdilim Okereke, stressed the need to strengthen democracy and anti-corruption efforts in the country.

Okereke highlighted the importance of protecting fundamental rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and peaceful protest while noting the need for citizens’ participation in governance and the importance of an independent judiciary.
