Experts have recommended that higher education should help students comfortably compete in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) era by including it in their curriculum.

They made the recommendation at the 14th University of Lagos (UNILAG) Annual Research Conference and Fair on ‘Automation and Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities for 21st Century Research and Development’.

A communiqué issued at the end of the conference and signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Obinna Chukwu, stated that AI was transforming the nature of almost everything connected to human life, including education, employment, economy, communication and healthcare among others.

It observed that higher education would be impacted by AI in many ways, especially in curricula and enrolment, noting that many countries suffer from significant skills mismatches due to the inability of the education system to accurately reflect the demands of employers and the frictions in the labour market.

The “educational system should be more creative, and skills driven; emphasis should be more on skills acquisition through the manipulation of analytical technology,” it said.
